Ngā Karahipi

Whakauae has a long history of contributing to building skills and expertise for Māori researchers.

Whakauae Research has committed to support Māori student development, emerging researchers, and leading new Māori researchers in the field of Māori and Indigenous research with the help of funding awarded to us by the Health Research Council’s Independent Research Organisation Capability Fund.

While Whakauae has a long history of contributing to building skills and expertise for Māori researchers, this new funding will allow us to be strategic and aspirational in developing a long-term vision for how to support capacity and capability building for Māori research.

Our Points of Difference

We are actively working to establish a thriving community of Māori research students and researchers. We offer Kaupapa Māori support including pastoral care and awhi, warmth and caring, tools and discipline to support the progress of our team.

Pae Tawhiti Scholarship

Whakauae was established in 2005 by Ngāti Hauiti, an iwi located in central Rangitīkei. The aim of establishing Whakauae was twofold: to develop the research capacity of Ngāti Hauiti and to undertake high quality Māori-centred health research to inform, and contribute to, improved outcomes for Māori.

To further progress Whakauae’s aims of developing Māori health research capacity, Whakauae will offer post-graduate research scholarships to support Māori students interested in pursuing a career in health research; where health is understood in its broadest sense.

The scholarships are available to Masters candidates in their thesis year and to PhD candidates, through an application and assessment process. Applicants for the scholarships should be enrolled in a Masters (by thesis) or PhD programme, which will contribute to improving the health and wellbeing of Māori whānau, hapū and iwi.
