Whakauae Researchers Recognised in the 2026 HRC Career Development Awards

Māori Health Research Knowledge Translation Grant 2026

Dr Tanya Allport has been awarded a Māori Health Research Knowledge Translation Grant to progress Aroā cards: He kete whakaaro mō te rangatahi, a kaupapa Māori initiative designed to support rangatahi Māori to deepen their political understanding and explore how systems and structures influence their hauora as Tangata Whenua.

Building on a 2023 Whakauae Research studentship, early insights revealed a gap between rangatahi experiences and mainstream political narratives. A prototype set of culturally grounded playing cards was created to spark peer-led kōrero and strengthen youth confidence in navigating political spaces.

Māori Health Research Masters Scholarship 2026

Identity intersections and wellbeing among takatāpui in Aotearoa has been awarded a Māori Health Research Masters Scholarship for 2026. Led by Ben Barton and supported by supervisors Dr Amohia Boulton and Associate Professor Clive Aspin, this kaupapa explores how the intersections of Māori and takatāpui identity shape sexual health and holistic wellbeing.

Using kaupapa Māori principles and a critical qualitative approach, the study centres takatāpui voices and experiences. It will draw on semi-structured, kanohi-ki-te-kanohi interviews with participants from across Aotearoa, supported by thematic analysis and sense-making wānanga. The research aims to provide actionable insights to improve sexual health services and wider wellbeing supports for takatāpui communities, while contributing to tino rangatiratanga and equity within the health sector.

“We appreciate the opportunity to progress these kaupapa through this year’s Career Development Award and Knowledge Translation funding round. We recognise the competitive nature of every HRC funding round, and the calibre of the Māori health research community. These funds will allow us to support the growth of our emerging researchers, a critical goal of our centre.  Whakauae Research Services Limited extends its thanks to HRC, the reviewers and to our research colleagues.”  Dr Amohia Boulton, Research Director, Whakauae Research Services Limited.

These awards provide an opportunity for Whakauae Research Services Limited to continue contributing to kaupapa Māori research that supports improved outcomes for Māori. We recognise the collective effort of researchers, communities, and organisations across Aotearoa who remain dedicated to advancing Māori health.
