On Saturday 18th of July 2026, the Whakauae Executive Director, Dr Amohia Boulton, presented the Whakauae 2024-2025 Annual Report at the annual Ngāti Hauiti Hui-A-Tau. The hui (also known as an Annual General Meeting) is a yearly event whereby the many entities that comprise Group Hauiti report on their year’s mahi usually through an annual report, and on their respective financial positions, through the production of audited accounts. Entities within the Group include Te Maru o Ruahine Trust, Te Pātiki Trust, Te Patiki Holdings Ltd, Rakautaonga Whenua Topu Trust and of course Whakauae Research Services Ltd. A consolidated set of financials for the entire group is also presented. The hui is a significant event for the entities that make up Group Hauiti as each organisation discharges its duties to the Rūnanga and iwi members regarding transparency, accountability and the effective stewardship of iwi resources.
This year the Whakauae annual report was a little different. We took the unusual step of presenting not one, but two years’ worth of reporting on Whakauae activities. The 2024 year proved to be another year of significant change, not just for our organisation, but for our sector more widely. In the course of managing that change, despite our best efforts, we were unable to produce our standard annual report format. The report presented at this year’s hui therefore, covered research contracts and outputs for both 2024 and 2025, as well as two sets of audited Financial Performance Reports.
We also decided this year to step away from the production and dissemination of hard copy annual reports, deciding instead to embrace the technological age and prepare digital copies for whānau to read as they listened to a verbal presentation of the 2025 year that was. By way of accessing a QR code, whānau were encouraged to link to the annual report and take their time perusing the parts of the report that most excited them. We received overwhelmingly positive feedback on the use of both the QR code and interactive link to the report and will look to make this form of reporting our new normal into the future.

We are really pleased to be able to bring this report to fruition after a period of abeyance. Apart from reporting on our business as usual, including the numbers and types of contracts we undertook throughout 2024-2025, and the many outputs produced over that time period, we have also been able to include an article on the Whakauae 20th Celebration held in March of 2025. The photos and messages of support outlined in the report remind us of a day in which we were truly able to celebrate success as Māori, and our goals for Māori prosperity and wellbeing.
Our greatest appreciation to those who made this happen including Whakauae team members Darcy Karaka and Mel Potaka Osborne who collated the Research Output information; the amazing Maria Forlong and her colleagues at Prue Anderson Accountants for their work producing the financials and to the Silks Audit team; the talented Alanah Brown for the photos; and to the ever-enthusiastic Jeff Croot and his wonderful team at Inferno Design who always produce the most stunning finished product.
