Whakauae Intern Lead and Senior Researcher Dr Logan Hamley has co-edited a special issue of the Journal of the Royal Society of New Zealand, Māori Data Sovereignty: Research, Practice and Policy, launched this month. The special issue celebrates a decade of Te Mana Raraunga, the Māori Data Sovereignty network, and reflects on the development of the Māori data sovereignty principles and associated action in research and policy.
This special issue further documents the substantial progress made in enacting Māori data sovereignty into practice, and its positive contributions to both science and Te Ao Māori. The collection includes 9 articles that cover a broad range of topics including whakapapa data, tikanga and ethics in visual research, teaching Māori data sovereignty through escape rooms, and more.
Among the contributions is an article published by a team of Whakauae researchers, Dr Amohia Boulton, Dr Logan Hamley, and Darcy Karaka, who developed Te Pā Raraunga, a Data Governance Model for Ngāti Hauiti. The model uses the metaphor of a pā tūwatawata with each part representing a key aspect of data governance. Whakauae first presented this work at the Global Indigenous Data Sovereignty (GIDSov) conference in Canberra, Australia, in 2025. Its publication provides an opportunity to share the model more widely and contribute to the growing body of Māori and Indigenous data sovereignty Research.
Whakauae continues to develop and implement Te Pā Raraunga to strengthen data governance for Whakauae and Ngāti Hauiti, while contributing to the wider advancement of Māori data sovereignty and Māori data governance.
