Perceptions of Papakāinga - An examination of 'home' and how to cater services for Māori

Our vision is that in Aotearoa all whānau can live in home spaces and places of their own choosing, and which provide all the features required for whānau to flourish.

For this vision to become reality we need to hear as many experiences and aspirations from Māori as possible. Whakauae research, in partnership with Wai Research, today releases the Perceptions of Papakāinga – An examination of ‘home' and how to cater services for Māori booklet, which presents the findings of a 12-month research project funded by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga and the Health Research Council of New Zealand.

The booklet provides an insight into some of these viewpoints, where a range of Māori participants from Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland and the Rangitīkei reflect on the things that are needed in a home space/place in order to feel safe, nurtured and sustained.

The kaumātua, pakeke and rangatahi showcased in the booklet tell us that home – whether in the city or beyond – needs to be thought of as so much more than a mere physical house or building.

We hope that by sharing the kōrero of the participants of this research we are able to contribute to the current ongoing debate on how to create ‘homes' for Māori in Aotearoa.
