Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou, my name is Lucy de Young Hakaraia and I am currently a student at AUT Te Wānanga Aronui o Tāmaki Makaurau. I am Majoring in Animation with a minor in Motion Capture and Film. I came to university with a visual arts and illustration background and it grew into a love for storytelling through design, especially in ways that can incorporate Te Ao Māori.
It is a privilege and great opportunity to be working with Whakauae Research Services on a project that connects creativity and kaupapa Māori. My studentship encompasses designing a comic strip that explains and unpacks the concepts of systems change in an accessible and visually engaging way. Systems change is an essential and important korero that can be complex and hard to understand, so our goal is to create something relatable and simplified - a story that speaks to our communities, students, institutes, and whanau that creates understanding, curiosity, and action.
Through this project, I’m excited to be able to combine my design skills with mātauranga Māori in a meaningful and impactful way. As a wahine Māori, it means alot to me to give back with my skill set, to include stories, values, and imagery that help my community learn and connect with important ideas. At the same time, I have been able to learn and deepen my own understanding of systems thinking and of kaupapa Māori which is a privilege in itself. Ngā mihi nui ki a Whakauae for this opportunity - I am excited for what's to come.
