We’re proud to share the release of a new booklet developed as part of the Investigating Barriers and Enablers to Preventive HIV Access for Māori Communities pilot study.
This research was initiated in response to growing concern that while HIV transmission rates are decreasing nationally, Māori communities — particularly Māori men and takatāpui — are not experiencing these same improvements. Instead, barriers like stigma, limited access to culturally safe care, and fear of judgement continue to prevent many from accessing the tools and services that could protect their health and wellbeing.
Turning Research into Action
Grounded in kaupapa Māori and informed by the voices and experiences of Māori participants, the new resource responds directly to the challenges highlighted through the research.
The PrEP Booklet for Māori Communities offers:
This booklet aligns with Aotearoa’s National HIV Action Plan (2023–2030) and contributes to the wider goal of eliminating new HIV transmissions and promoting mana-enhancing health care for all.
Acknowledging Our Partners
This project would not have been possible without the input and guidance of our advisory partners. We offer our sincere thanks to everyone who contributed their time, lived experience, and cultural insight — your support helped ensure this mahi is grounded, relevant, and responsive to the needs of our communities.
