Brief Description:

This small research project is supported by the Independent Research Organisation Capability (IROC) funding awarded to Whakauae by the Health Research Council (HRC) in 2022. You can find out more here.

The purpose of the research is to document significant factors in the establishment, and subsequent consolidation, of Whakauae Research Services Ltd over the period 2005 - 2011. Several key events occurred during the period that both informed the development of Whakauae and importantly created the platform for the organisation’s ongoing success.

In addition to reviewing relevant documents, we will invite people who played key roles in those early years of development to take part in interviews over the period May to August 2023. The data collected will be analysed to form the basis of a brief report to be completed by the end of 2023.

Whakauae: The Early Years 2005-2011 will become part of the Whakauae archive and will sit alongside other core organisational documents including strategic plans, annual plans, annual reports and the 10-year commemoration publication. The report will likely also be shared with other iwi and communities to support their endeavours to establish research entities outside of the academy.

This research project is premised on the whakatauki “kia whakatōmuri te haere whakamua”. We will therefore reflect on the values and vision of Ngāti Hauiti kaumātua and iwi members and their contribution to the development of Whakauae. The organisation is currently experiencing a period of strong growth. We are especially mindful of the importance of firmly anchoring future development in the values expressed by our kaumātua and iwi leaders.
